Voluntary Action Shrewsbury's website - helping you make a difference

Other Ways to Make a Difference

Can't volunteer - don't worry, you can still make a difference by donating, recycling, writing etc. See below for ideas:

Write a letter:

If a local voluntary sector organisation has helped you, your friends or family - write them a thank you letter and send copies of the letter to the Shropshire Star, Shrewsbury Chronicle, BBC Radio Shropshire, your local Councillor etc. to make sure everyone knows about the good work being done in and around Shrewsbury!

Donate items:

Home-Start Shrewsbury (supporting families with children under 5) welcome donations of baby equipment especially stairgates.

Shrewsbury's charity shops welcome saleable books, clothes, bric-a-brac, toys and the YMCA and Sue Ryder shops even take furntiture.

Shrewsbury and South Shropshire Furniture Schemes welcome donations of furniture, curtains, bedding, electrical goods especially good quality cookers, fridges and washing machines.

Use the Charity plastic bags which are often distributed throughout neighbourhoods and leave out on the appropriate day.

Donate money:

All of Shrewsbury's voluntary sector organisations would appreciate any monetary donations to help them continue or extend their work. You might also like to think of including one or more of the charities in your will. And don't forget extra help from Gift Aid - ask the charity you are donating to for more information.

Give blood:

Shop caringly:

Buy Fair Trade coffee, tea, chocolate etc. from Oxfam or the Shrewsbury fair Trade shop on St. John's Hill. Buy presents, wrapping paper and cards from Shrewsbury's charity shops.

Look for websites which donate money such as www.everyclick.com which donates a percentage of its sales to charities.

Recycle:

Bring Bring - Oxfam wants your unwanted mobile 'phones. On average each one is worth £5 to the charity.

Foreign currency - Oxfam and Cancer Research UK can exchange your unwanted foreign currency into cash for their work.

Stamps - Oxfam, Samaritans and Save the Children Fund Shops want used stamps. Why not set up a collection point in your home or office? If you can trim collected stamps to leave a 3mm margin - even better.

Toner cartridges - Confide, the Shrewsbury Counselling Service can recycle your old toner cartridges to provide a little extra funding for their services.

And don't forget your 'Green Box' and recycling points at various Supermarket stores and car parks around Shrewsbury.
