Volunteers - in their own words
David
When I went to the Volunteer Bureau, I had been off work for about 6 months. I had no confidence or self esteem. After being introduced to Jane, I had a flicker of hope given back to me. She arranged a meeting with Staff at Headway House and came with me to an interview. I have not looked back from that moment.
I instantly began my trip to recovery whilst enabling clients in their activities. We have a wide variety of things to do. I have gained as much from the clients as I hope I have given to them. Also, I have gained enough confidence to be able to get a part-time job as a carer. Thank you Voluntary Action Shrewsbury.

Knowing that I am contributing something, however small to the lives of others, helping them through their difficulties helps me to feel better about myself and gives me a great lift. Having something to look forward to that I enjoy doing, to get up the next day for really helps take the edge off my depression. It is very beneficial for me to leave my problems behind for a little while and focus on the work I am doing. It helps fuel the belief that I can do something with my life, that I do have things to offer.

I felt I had no independence because of my physical disability so volunteering was a step towards independence. I volunteer at Headway Shropshire. It's given me insight into the problems of those who use the day centre. It's a real focus for the week for me. It means I have a life away from home...
Sharon
Carrying out voluntary work assisted in my success in going back into full-time employment. The knowledge gained from working in the care sector allowed me to seek employment in a field where I had previously no knowledge....
Susan
I enjoy meeting other volunteers, have learnt a bit about the organisation, fair trade and books. All people very friendly and soon flet at home and accepted, feel as though I know the ropes and it's nice to do something worthwhile. Thank you for all your help and support (especially Joy).
Another Susan
I volunteer for Age Concern and enjoy it immensely. I get a lot of satisfaction myself and enjoy the work. I know the work the volunteers put in at the Day Centre is appreciated by the members.
Joe
I'm very impressed with how helpful people who are running the volunteering are being. I am also please to be gaining new skills and have the opportunity to gain new qualifications.
