The Shrewsbury Ark - Day Centre for the Homeless

The opportunity

To help, support, inform and advise service users on issues affecting them and to assist in the preparation and serving of food and drink to service users.

The organisation

There will be all sorts of volunteer opportunities available at the Ark. Initially we will need support workers and kitchen assistants to deal with the first influx of service users. Thereafter we hope to run a number of exciting projects from here, including a clothes and food bank, a garden and allotment project, a basic life skills and education project, a computer skills project and a relaxation and meditation classes - and that is just for starters! We will also have an ongoing need for administrative assistants and fundraisers.

Skills/Qualifications

Effective listener, empathetic, quick minded and non-judgemental.
Ability to take on and give out appropriate information and to manage diverse questions in a confident and calm manner.
Mature in approach, (if not in age), not easily offended, able to converse at any level.
Good communication skills, especially verbal, assertive.

No previous experience necessary, training given as required.

Getting there

The Ark is opposite the main Shrewsbury Railway Station and easily approached on foot from the main bus station.
